Rowan View

IBI Group provided architecture, landscape architecture and interior design services to Kier Group PLC and Mersey Care NHS Foundation for the creation of Rowan View, a medium secure healthcare unit in Liverpool, UK. The facility co-locates mental health and learning disability care services in one place to provide patients local, state-of-the-art care.

IBI Group’s landscape and interior design ethos explicitly address recovery. Utilizing curves and liminal transitional spaces throughout the interior and exterior of the building, our ‘rings of recovery’ design aesthetic will ensure patient engagement during their sessions.

The facility’s design prioritizes natural light as a key element to human well-being. Ward accommodations include views of external green spaces that are easily accessible. Additionally, the therapy hub is designed in a circular arrangement around a central landscaped courtyard to provide patients with a calming therapeutic environment.

Virtual reality was used throughout the design process to progress building design sign-off without the need to meet in person during the pandemic. The facility was also designed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards, supporting the future of sustainable healthcare through energy-efficient principles.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation sought to reconfigure care services across the region, integrate expertise and innovative approaches to care and recovery, and create a new centre of excellence in forensic care. Our clinically led design has ensured the building fully supports the application of expert knowledge and strategic aspirations, underpins fundamental clinical transformation, and amplifies the impact of treatment rather than merely enabling it.

“IBI have undertaken a rigorous engagement programme with both service users and staff which has resulted in a design that meets the needs of both staff and service users. “They have listened carefully to what was required and whenever possible incorporated this into the design. Witnessing their involvement with service users was heartening in that it was not a tokenistic exercise to tick a box, they really listened to the service users and came back with a design that included as many ideas as possible that the service users had suggested. “The engagements sessions were delivered at the correct level and pace and were for a duration which was suitable for the service users. The fact that the majority of the service users remained for the whole duration of the sessions is testimony to how they made the sessions interesting and interactive for the service users. What was very interesting was that the colour choices of the service users around how they wanted to feel in certain environments matched the findings in the research undertaken by IBI. This was reassuring when considering the interiors of the building and what colours to use in the various rooms to ensure that service users feel how they wish to feel in these areas.”
